Abstract
Over the past few decades, the Mediterranean Sea has accommodated an increasing number of fish species arriving from the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Gibraltar, as well as from the Indo-Pacific region and the Red Sea via the Suez Canal. The ribbonfish (Trachipteridae) are rare deep-sea fishes only recorded in limited areas of the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean dealfish, Trachipterus trachypterus, a member of the family Trachipteridae, is scientifically documented here for the first time from the Syrian coast (eastern Mediterranean).
